Frequently Asked Questions

You are welcome to email us at info@beforeconception.com if you do not see the answer to your question below.

We are a "cash only" practice at this time.  We accept credit cards as payment.  The fee may be eligible for reimbursement through your HSA or FSA plans, however you would want to check with your health insurance carrier to make sure.  We will provide you a super bill for preceoncption counseling.

Preconception counseling is similar to any other initial consult with a primary care provider.  For instance, we go over your medical history, family history, medications and allergies.  We discuss any specific concerns that you may have.  Then we give guidance on how to prepare for pregnancy.  We may recommend lab work, certain prenatal vitamins, specifics on a healthier lifestyle or even referral to a specialist.  Preconception counseling is relatively simple and incredibly important, yet so few do it.  Our hope is that this convenient virtual format will encourage more to take this important step.

The fee covers your initial consult, a follow up consult and communication along the way.  Let's say you're having difficulty tolerating a prenatal vitamin that we recommend during the initial consult.  You can just email or text us and we'll recommend an alternative.  Or we can discuss at the follow up consult.  It is all included in the initial fee.  Our goal is 100 percent patient satisfaction.  If you are unhappy for any reason, then we will provide a refund of your initial fee without any questions and asked.

At least 3 months before you plan to become pregnant is ideal.  3 months usually allows enough time to correct any issues, such as iron deficiency, before pregnancy.  However, any time before pregnancy is a great idea.

We provide care only before pregnancy.  That is our niche.  Your obstetritian takes over your prenatal care once you become pregnant.  Although we are happy to stay in touch and get updates on how things are going.

Yes!  However, you would need to travel to one of the 6 states where we are licensed on the day of the virtual consult.  For instance, someone living in Michigan could drive down to Indiana on the day of the consult.  We would simply ask you to text us a photo of a receipt from a local store (such as a coffee shop) or ATM to show us that you are in one of the 6 states on the day of the consult. Thankfully, the 6 states are spread out around the country making us reasonable driving distance for many.  California and Arizona serving the West Coast.  Virginia on the East Coast.  Texas and Oklahoma in the South.  Indiana in the Midwest.  We do plan to expand the number of states where we offer services so check back in the future if you do not see a convenient state for you at this time.

We specialize in one thing: preconception counseling.  Our whole reason for being is to get couples prepared for pregnancy.  We believe that this focus makes us unique.  An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.  We believe the greatest impact on the health of the child happens even before pregnancy, or in the very first few days of pregnancy.  That is why we have chosen to specialize on this time period.  We also do NOT have any corporate sponsorships or side deals.  Our loyalty is 100 percent to our patients.

Absolutely!!  In fact, we encourage doing a consult as a couple.  There is less research on preconception counseling for men, but there is some.  In addition, we encourage men to take the initiative to do a consult on their own then share the general concepts with their partners, if that is what works best in their specific situation.  You are also welcome to bring family or loved ones to sit in on the consult.  We believe the more support, the better.

We do not offer infertility treatments.  However, we can share generally accepted principals on when a referral to a reproductive endocrinologist for fertility treatments is appropriate.
